+ pressure = + gas ???

Postby LSAT on Fri Nov 20, 2009 11:30 am

It was recommended by my sleep doctor that I increase my pressure from 7 to 11. I did it gradually and have noticed an increase in flatulance...not just at night, but also somewhat during the day. Gass-X before bed helps, but I was wondering if this is a common occurance as you increase pressure. :o

I got the same but it seemed to last just a couple of hours in the morning and went away after a few weeks, thankfully

Yes, I have noticed the same as well. For me it's mostly outgassing during the night and in the morning. :P

For me, I noticed if I increased my EPR (exhalation relief) up 1 cm, and also increased my pressure 1 cm (to keep a constant average pressure), that helps me with less gas.

I recently had to switch to an autopap because of "bloating". It was painful. I believe my doc over-prescribed my pressure at 14. My autopap is set from 10-16 and it has not gotten higher than 12.5 and I feel MUCH better. I believe lying on your back makes it worse also.

i think turning on EPR helped I use mine on level 2 now. I tried to turn it off and got bloating issues.
Unfortunately for LSAT I don't think there is any exhale pressure relief on the F&P that he is using

You are right, but, I've never had any problem with exhaling...even at the higher pressure.

I was told by my doc, a clinician and the DME that if you are swallowing that much air the pressure is set too high. I was at 20/16 on bipap and was increased up to 21/17 and had the problem with swallowing air. My pressure was dropped back down. Once I had surgery, my pressure requirements went down. However as I recovered I found I was again swallowing air and found my pressure was again too high. My min pressure is now way down at 5 and upper is 14 but I rarely go over 12 and normally around 8 all night.

I was basically told that if someone is now complaining of belching and passing gas that didn't have a problem with it before, something has happened with them that they now require less pressure. As an example weight loss, or in my situation tonsils removed and UPPP then as I recovered my pressure requirement dropped a lot over four months.

Talk to your doc, clinician or DME and let them know about the gas. Some people just swallow air.

Gerry
